These two things alone will be way more important than anything else in this guide. The device used to kill the snakes was likely a device called a "penetrating captive bolt gun." The FWC officers spent around four hours killing snakes, firing multiple shots to the heads of some snakes when it appeared that the first shots failed to kill them. After Coffee allowed them into the facility, the officers began pulling snakes out of their enclosures and killing them, with what Coffee described as a sort of nail gun, on the floor of McAdam's facility. This turned out to not be the real reason for their visit. The officers said that they wanted to check to see if it was one of Coffee's snakes that had escaped. On that date, coinciding with the observance of Passover and Holy Thursday, FWC officers Lex Corteguera, Jonathon Wright, Zach Beppel, and Christopher Ryan showed up to McAdams' facility, alleging that they had a report of an escaped Reticulated python in the area. (Photo by Chris Coffee, who has granted permission for this photo to be published and disseminated)Ĭoffee's pythons were maintained at the facility of Bill McAdam with FWC's full knowledge of their whereabouts for approximately a year, until FWC's raid and subsequent massacre on Thursday, April 6, 2023. Coffee's life has been turned upside down and he is still on probation as a result of the charges that never should have been issued against him.Ībove: FWC Officer poses for picture with a freshly-killed captive bred Hypomelanistic Burmese python named “Sweetie,” before the snake’s carcass is unceremoniously thrown into a trash can. However, rather than seize the animals, FWC officers told Coffee that he had to continue to keep the snakes in captivity and that he could not rehome or euthanize them or he would be arrested again. He asked FWC for more time, believing that he had no choice.įWC responded by raiding Coffee's facility, arresting him, and issuing him two charges for each Reticulated and Burmese python possessed, for a total of 72 criminal charges. In an effort to remain on good terms with FWC, Coffee notified FWC in good faith about a year ago that he was having difficulties rehoming his animals in the short amount of time allowed by FWC. Nonetheless, after the rules banning the snakes were passed, Coffee chose to rehome 120 of his pythons, but he was unable to disperse all of his collection before an arbitrary FWC deadline. Therefore, his animals should have been grandfathered in and exempt from the new regulations. Under prior directive from FWC, Coffee was forced to maintain the snakes in captivity for over a year since an arbitrary deadline had passed to rehome the animals.Ĭoffee had a large collection of both Reticulated and Burmese pythons, which were possessed legally with a "Conditional Species Permit," before FWC made that permit obsolete by passing "Prohibited Species" rules in 2021. The FWC officers also killed 29 Reticulated pythons and five Burmese pythons owned by Chris Coffee. The pet Boa constrictor was misidentified as a python and, according to its owner Bill McAdam, executed via "nail gun to the head" by four FWC officers. Even from the most innocuous of things we can uncover more of the Library’s history. Most importantly for our purposes, Brodhead used scraps of envelopes as bookmarks. He continued to work and published several titles including History of the State of New York, considered to be one of the best works about colonial New York. His work would eventually be published by the government in a humbling 15-volume set entitled Documents Relating to the Colonial History of New York. With the support of the New-York Historical Society, he became an envoy for the State Legislature to The Hague, charged with procuring and transcribing archival documents related to the colonization of New York. It was there where his passion for New York history was fed. He was accepted to the New York Bar in 1835 but lucked into a job as an attaché of a foreign legation in the Netherlands. The bulk of his collection reflects his passion for history, with many books relating to the history of New York, including A Bibliographical and Historical Essay on the Dutch Books and Pamphlets which held our surprise envelope.īefore serving as a Library trustee, Brodhead was a scholar, a historian of the American colonial age. His wife generously donated his personal collection of over 1,000 texts to the Library after his death in 1873. He served as a trustee for the Library from 1858 to 1871. From here we set out to discover John Romeyn Brodhead’s history and his connection to The New York Society Library. Brodhead-the same name as on the envelope-written along the top margins of several pages in the book. Step 1: Sort Your Scraps These are the scraps I started with: Photo: Upcycle My Stuff Super teeny slivers of scrap fabric and leftover thread It was basically one bag that I had filled with slivers, trimmings, and balls of thread from other sewing and craft projects. We found no other paper markers, but we did spot John R. Not to be discouraged, we thumbed through the book, hoping the contents of the envelope had been used to mark another page. It can also be a handwritten or printed work of fiction or nonfiction, usually on sheets of paper fastened or bound together within covers. To our disappointment, it was absolutely empty. Our initial quest momentarily forgotten, we looked inside the envelope. In handwriting belonging to an era long past was the following: When a bookmark tumbles out of an old book pristine and unwrinkled, it is like a gasp of breath from another century. We cracked the book open and, to our surprise, out fell a partial envelope with a near-perfect wax seal. It’s unlikely anyone’s looked at it in 50 years, much less checked it out. While researching the Visscher map, currently housed in the Reference Room, we pulled a book from the closed stacks that looked like it had seen better days. Behind the scenes at the Library we discover these little treasures. These bits and pieces of others’ lives fall out of books and into the present. Everyone who reads has their own way of marking their page: with an official weighted bookmark, a favorite postcard, or even dried flowers. Above the pages’ desk in the staff workroom of the Library is a collection of miscellanea collected from books over the years. Zettlr a Markdown editor focused on publishing / academics.Obsidian, a split-pane Markdown editor focused on bidirectional linking.Typora, a nicely polished Markdown editor – has the best support for math input I’ve seen. In the process of making Noteworthy I’ve been inspired by all the other great note-taking apps out there. When the pandemic started, I found myself with a lot of free time, so I decided it was time to make my own note-taking app called Noteworthy! I’ve been using it exclusively for my notes the past 3-4 months and it’s almost ready for public release! I had no idea where to look for the most “up to date” version of anything. So at this point, my notes were spread betweeen paper, OneNote, Typora, and Overleaf. Unfortunately, OneNote has terrible math support. It also helps remind me of my thought process when I go on a long depth-first tangent. If I’ve forgotten something, I can usually remember what else I had going on the same month/week, so having everything in a linear order really helped when I wanted to search over my past notes. Next, I started using OneNote to keep a daily work journal, in linear order.Typora doesn’t support anything like tags / wikilinks. This was fine, but I had a lot of trouble with organization. Next, I started using Typora for rough notes, and I’d eventually synthesize the most important ones into a LaTeX document with Overleaf.(however, these days I think notebooks are built into VS Code–so maybe it’s better). Eventually it just grew too cumbersome to start a notebook server every time I wanted to write. For a while I used Jupyter notebooks, since they enable a nice mix of code / math / markdown. This also isn’t ideal because of the lack of links, difficulty inserting images, etc. This works out well for some things, but when I’m writing LaTeX I feel to pressured to make everything look pretty. Next, I switched to a system where I’d take rough notes on paper, then polish them into a nice LaTeX document with overleaf that I could reference later.Writing math was easy, but it was too difficult to stay organized or to make changes later. Initially, I simply took notes on paper. Here’s a summary of the different workflows I’ve tried over the years: free and open source, for extensibility.support for tags + bidirectional links, for easy categorization and interlinking between notes.wysiwym (this is crucial for documents with lots of math).excellent math support (see my prosemirror-math extension for an example).works offline with my local files (ideally in a human-readable format, if not compliant Markdown).Read about news and updates published by members of the Oracle Java Platform Team.I have recently gone down the rabbit-hole of note-taking apps, since none of them seem to meet my criteria: Help shape the future of Java by joining and becoming an OpenJDK Contributor.įollow OpenJDK on Twitter for social updates. Not satisfied with just that, I decided the computer would be completely Mine and headed back and changed the admin name to Mine. TeamViewer was not being cooperative and logged us both off….Hmmm or maybe it was dipshit rick. Unlocking ricks controls he frantically began typing. First line of business, change the dicks admin password… No way out now. No amount of clicking or typing was going to save him now, it was useless. Once connected I put the bitch on lockdown and headed straight for the computer controls. ricky promptly sent the remaining pennies in his bank and sat, cock in hand, waiting for Me to demonstrate what fun TeamViewer is. The little fucktard couldn't wait to get screwed over and emailed Me curious about how it all works.Īfter explaining to the little weasel the drill, he was begging for a session and for Me to own his computer.
